THE much publicised TT Grand Games scheduled to be contested at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Saturday, has been cancelled.

According to information received from a senior official, a meeting of the Games committee was held yesterday, at which members were told by meet director and chief executive officer Regina John, the Games were off.

No reason for the cancellation of the Games was given.

Several calls were put through to officials for confirmation of the cancellation and the cause, but none answered their telephone.

Romour has it, however, that the cancellation was due mainly through lack of finance.

Games organisers had hinted earlier this week that they were not receiving any financial assistance from the Ministry of Sport nor the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago.

The TT Grand Games, the first of its kind in many years, promised local sports fans a 60-event programme featuring over 117 athletes from across the globe.

Included among the athletes expected to be on show was local shot put queen Cleopatra Borel, who was to be challenged by American Michelle Carter.

Also being advertised as invitees to the games were top US sprinter Ryan Bailey, Jamaicans Warren Weir, 2012 Olympic 200 metres bronze medallist and Natasha Morrison and Christine Ohuruogu of Englasnd, a former Olympic, world and Commonwealth 400 metres champion. There was to be a hughe after games party, at which patrons were promised appearances by Jamaican Tommy Lee, TT ’s Orlando Octave, Pternsky and Uncle Ellis
