LAWYERS Jason Haynes of Barbados and TT’s Tyrone Marcus launched their new book, entitled Commonwealth Caribbean Sports Law, on Tuesday evening, at the University Inn and Conference Centre, University of the West Indies St Augustine campus.
“We had one overarching objective in mind, and that was to deliver to you, our Caribbean people, an easy to read, easily accessible and certainly Caribbean-centric text that would inform your analysis and your appreciation of the law,” said Haynes. “We hope that, in this publication, we have delivered in respect to this objective.”
Quoting from the 362-page publication, Haynes said, “This book represents our passion for sport and the law, and our pride in our unique West Indian identity. We hope that this book serves as a tremendously important resource for scholars, students and practitioners in this increasingly important issue of law.”
Marcus lauded the roles played by his family, friends and legal colleagues towards this project.
Marcus said, “Jason and I were working on the same book, with the same title, at the same time, unknown to one another. We both were doing research on the same book with the same title. I think it’s God that brought us together and I would not have wanted it any other way.”
Feature speaker at the event was ex-national football team goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, who talked about the guidance provided by parents towards their children, as the youngsters pursue their dreams.
“We have to do a better job of empowering our children when they dream big,” said the 49-year-old, who is currently a football analyst at cable network ESPN.
Hislop expressed his gratitude towards Haynes and Marcus for granting him the privilege to both speak at Tuesday’s event, as well as write the book’s foreword.
Also speaking at the launch was Justice Adrian Saunders, president of the Caribbean Court of Justice.
